Residents living near an abandoned building in south London are being advised to close their windows as firefighters battle a blaze generating thick plumes of smoke visible for kilometres.

City officials said residents living within a kilometre of the intersection of Centre Street and Wharncliffe Road should close their windows because of the “excessive smoke.”

The London fire department said in a tweet firefighters are taking a defensive approachto battle flames shooting from the building at 10 Centre St.

Fire crews were called to the scene at about 6:45 p.m.

Police have closed Wharncliffe Road between Emery Street and Base Line Road. Residents are being asked to avoid the area.
