Residents near Rainham were told to keep their windows and doors shut after a major fire at a landfill yesterday afternoon (Friday, July 23).
Firefighters were called to a landfill site on Coldharbour Lane in Rainham, Greater London, soon after 5.25pm and remained on the site well into the night.
Large amounts of rubbish were on fire, and photos taken from far away showed smoke billowing into the air.

Ten fire engines were in attendance, and an investigation is now being carried out into the cause of the fire.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a fire at a landfill site on Coldharbour Lane in Rainham.
“Firefighters tackled a fire at a landfill site for household rubbish where a significant amount of rubbish was alight.

“Residents in the area are advised to keep their doors and windows shut due to the smoke.
“The Brigade was called at 5.26pm and the fire was under control by 8.52pm.
“Fire crews from Barking, Wennington, Dagenham, Hornchurch, East Ham and crews from surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
“The cause of the fire will be investigated.”
