Why Nuno Espirito Santo and Tottenham club doctors were worried about Oliver Skipp vs Colchester

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has called for caution concerning Oliver Skipp’s workload during pre-season.

The 20-year-old made an impressive return to the Tottenham line-up on Wednesday evening, playing the first 45 minutes of the clash at the JobServe Community Stadium as Spurs raced into a 3-0 lead.

His passing range caught the eye for the visitors, with Spurs fans in particular hailing his performance both during and after the game.

The performance built on an excellent 2020/21 season for Skipp as he spent the season on-loan with Norwich City.

He only missed one game as the Canaries secured an instant return to the Premier League but was unfortunate to pick up an ankle injury on the final day of the campaign ahead of his return to the Tottenham team.

Skipp’s performance against Colchester certainly suggests that he has fully recovered, but Espirito Santo has called for caution regardless.

Talking to Spurs’ official website after the game, he said: “We have to be really careful. The doctors were worried because he’s only getting back from injury. We have to be careful, but good for him. It’s always nice to have bodies.”

In his career so far, the young Englishman has made 23 appearances for Spurs, his breakthrough coming during the 2018/19 campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

He still has three years left to run on his current deal with Tottenham.
