Channel 4 Countdown: Anne Robinson’s first appearance on the show was actually more than 30 years ago and we love her very 80s look

Countdown’s been around for yonks.

It first aired in 1982, meaning it predates Chernobyl, the fall of the Berlin wall, and the Barclays Premier League – by some way.

Over the last 39 years, thousands of peculiar contestants have been tested on both their vocab and maths skills.

And recently, the show has welcomed a new host – BBC’S The Weakest Link legend, Anne Robinson.

But believe it or not, this isn’t the first time Anne has made an appearance on the show.

Anne was rocking some serious 80s vibes during her first Countdown appearance

The 70-year-old first appeared as a guest in 1987, and boy did she look retro.

Her barnet was the classic ‘80s ‘big hair’, but the clothes were something else.

Anne was sporting a grand, glittery crimson, woolly cardigan.

Combine that with the hair, and she had the1980s written all over her.

Well, at least to someone born in 1996.

In fact, when she took over as host last month (June 28), she touched on her original appearance.

Anne was the formidable host of The Weakest Link

Anne said: “Yeah, not my first appearance. If you’re trying to work it out, that was 1987 and the clue was my hair do.

“Bay City Rollers, very Bay City Rollers.”

She even bantered her co-host Rachel Riley about it.

“I reckon you were one year old when that was on,” she said.

That wasn’t all, however, as Ms Robinson also touched on sexism in the broadcasting industry.

She described herself as “oldest women on telly not judging cakes,” a reference to former Great British Bake Off host, Mary Berry.

Speaking to The Sun, Anne said: “I wonder why there aren’t more of us. I wonder why if Huw Edwards had a twin sister would she be reading the news on his days off?

“It’s almost as if news executives think that if they’re hiring a female news reader over 50, they have to make room for her mobility scooter in the studio.

“I can’t remember which local news we get here but it’s typical, the guy has got no hair and the female presenter is young and pretty and I don’t know when that’s going to change. I don’t know.

“I do know I’m the oldest woman on television not judging cakes.”
