Tottenham in advanced talks to sign Atalanta duo Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini

1

Tottenham are in advanced negotiations to sign Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta, football.london understands.

It is set to be a key summer for the Lilywhites as they look to solve their defensive woes for good, with new managing director of football Fabio Paratici on the lookout for a new centre-back to boost Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.

Heavily linked with Lyon’s Joachim Andersen and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, Paratici is believed to have a very strong interest in Romero, who he signed for Juventus from Genoa in 2019.

Paratici’s way of working in the transfer market is to negotiate for up to 10 players for each position he wants to fill in a squad and the Argentina international is believed to be the current leading contender of the defenders he has looked at to come in through the door as Spurs look to revamp their backline.

Joining Juventus in 2019 from Genoa before returning to them on loan, last September the 23-year-old signed a two-year loan deal with Atalanta, who have the option to buy the player for €16million (£13.8m).

It is believed that Atalanta will exercise their option to purchase the talented player a year early, with Paratici then in negotiations with the Italian side to sell to Tottenham for a generous profit.

A key part of their defence as he played his role in the team finishing third in Serie A in 2020/21, Romero then tasted Copa America success at the end of the campaign as he helped Argentina defeat Brazil in the final.

A player who is quick, good in the air and a leader, Romero, who was Serie A Defender of the Year last term, ticks plenty of boxes for Tottenham and his versatility would also boost Espirito Santo’s side.

Capable of playing either side in a back two or in the middle of a three-man defence, the Argentine international can also operate as a right-back.

football.london understands that Spurs are also in talks to sign goalkeeper Gollini ahead of the new Premier League season.

Previously spending time with Manchester United as a youngster, the 26-year-old started his senior career at Hellas Verona before moving to Aston Villa in the summer of 2016.

Following a brief stay at Villa Park as he returned to Italy to link up with Atalanta on an 18-month loan deal, Gollini joined the Italian side on a permanent deal in 2018 and has since played a key part in their rise up the Italian table in recent seasons.

His potential arrival at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would see the Lilywhites sign their long-term successor for Hugo Lloris and it could potentially open up a move for the Frenchman should an acceptable bid come in for his services this summer.

Despite his two spells in England, Gollini isn’t classed as a homegrown player.

Tottenham are keen to tie up a number of moves before the Premier League opener against Man City and there is also expected to be a number of outgoings in N17 as well before that August 15 date.

Next week in particular is expected to be a busy one in the market for the north London club as Paratici aims to get players in and out the door to allow Espirito Santo to have some new faces to work with in the final weeks of pre-season.
