The £50m Arsenal transfer that Chelsea and Man United may live to regret

Arsenal have already completed two bits of transfer business this summer, but a third deal may not be too far away.

Mikel Arteta has brought in both Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga from Benfica and Anderlecht respectively so far in this window, but the Gunners are not done there.

football.londonunderstands that Arsenal have agreed a £50million deal to sign Brighton defender Ben White after an impressive season down on the south coast.

White, who was called up to Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad for the recently concluded Euro 2020 campaign, agreed personal terms with the Gunners weeks ago, but a fee has finally been agreed between the two Premier League clubs.

The likes of Chelsea, who are reportedly on the hunt for a new central defender, and Manchester United have also been linked with a move for White.

The Blues have been linked with a host of new defenders with Thomas Tuchel looking to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited from Frank Lampard in January.

Tuchel has the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma as options for the centre-back position.

Despite links with White, it seems like the Blues were never seriously interested in the soon-to-be Arsenal defender, but this could be something they end up regretting.

That’s according to former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, who issued his honest verdict on White moving to the Emirates Stadium.

“Ultimately, as a player, you can only make a decision based on the opportunity in front of you,” Murphy told talkSPORT, via the Mirror.

“If I’m Ben White, I’m going to Arsenal, because they are the ones after me and it’s a step up, it’s a huge club.

“Yes, it’s a risk in terms of will they progress from last season and can Mikel Arteta improve that squad? But he’s obviously sold him that and he feels wanted.

“It’s a massive opportunity because he will play every week, it’s a great environment to play your football and a better environment than Brighton.

“Is it a progression in his career? Yes it is. It’s easy to look at last season and think Arsenal won’t be competitive. But they could get into the top-four next season.

“You can only move to a club that wants you. I agree that his quality and potential is really good and I’m surprised that Manchester United or Chelsea haven’t come in for him.”
