UEFA open disciplinary proceedings against England after Euro 2020 final chaos vs Italy

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings following events involving England supporters before Sunday’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

The match, that ended in a 3-2 penalty shootout victory for the Azzurri after the 1-1 draw, was somewhat overshadowed by events that took place before.

Footage emerged of England supporters, who did not have a ticket for the huge clash, trying to break through the barriers at the iconic stadium in London.

Now, UEFA have opened an investigation as the governing body issue four charges to the Football Association (FA) for what happened at the weekend.

The four charges against the FA include:

• Invasion of the field of play by its supporters – Article 16(2)(a) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR)

• Throwing of objects by its supporters – Article 16(2)(b) DR

• Disturbance caused by its supporters during the national anthem – Article 16(2)(g) DR

• Lighting of a firework by its supporters – Article 16(2)(c) DR

UEFA said: “The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course.

“Separately, and in accordance with Article 31(4) DR, a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation into events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium.

A pitch invader somehow found his way onto the pitch during the match between the two countries, while England fans also jeered the Italian national anthem.

As well as this, there was trouble outside the stadium, with thousands of ticket-less supporters turning up to Wembley.

The FA will carry out a “full review and investigation” regarding the events that occurred.
