Grieving son says 84-year-old was ‘doped to the gills’ by London care home staff ahead of her death

A grieving son has claimed his mum was “doped to the gills” by Waltham Forest care home staff in the interval main up to her death.

Daisy Wood had been prescribed anti-anxiety medicine after being repeatedly shoved by a staff member who was later fired and convicted of assault.

Ms Wood died of pneumonia aged 84 on February 21, 2019 after being rushed to hospital from St Catherine Care Home in Leytonstone.

East London coroner Nadia Persaud discovered that staff’s failure to “adequately observe” Ms Wood meant she was unresponsive by the time a physician was referred to as to see her.

Ms Wood was prescribed the anti-anxiety medicine Lorazepam earlier that month, after the bodily assault brought about her psychological misery.

Ms Persaud said care home staff mustn’t have continued to give her the sedative medicine in the days main up to her death, when she appeared drowsier than regular.

Her son advised Walthamstow Coroner’s Court: “There’s been Lorazepam (wrongly) administered and the nurse didn’t take any discover or curiosity and let it proceed. I discover that completely disgraceful.

“She was doped to the gills simply to maintain her quiet. If that’s what we do to outdated individuals in care houses there wants to be main reform.”

However, after listening to two days of proof, Ms Persaud dominated that, regardless of the failings of staff, she couldn’t state “on the steadiness of possibilities” that Ms Wood’s death was preventable.

She stated: “I discover that there was a failure by staff at St Catherine’s care home to adequately observe Daisy’s situation. Staff couldn’t presumably have carried out competent checks.

“This was not a state that she descended into over a matter of minutes. This would have taken hours or presumably days.

“But none of the medical witnesses have been in a position to state that, on the steadiness of possibilities, Daisy’s death would have been prevented had medical care been accessed at an earlier time.”

Ms Persaud famous that she discovered the proof of one former staff member at the home, who insisted Ms Wood was “verbalising that she was wonderful” earlier that day, “unreliable”.

The courtroom heard that, in December 2018, Ms Wood was repeatedly shoved by a member of staff. The staff member was fired from the home and later convicted of assault.

St Catherine Care Home is at present rated “good” by the CQC.
