Uckfield based firm designs and builds entrance canopy for London building

Uckfield-based Design & Display Structures has designed, engineered, manufactured, and installed, a main entrance canopy at a building in South West London.

Business owner Allan Curtis said D&D took a client’s freeform concept and configured complex geometry through 3D/2D modelling to meet the opposing restraints of providing an attractive profile, while achieving appropriate rainwater falls and connections with adjacent buildings, and also maintaining optimal modular manufacture opportunities.

The project began with a primary steelwork support structure formed around a ground level rainwater pipe outlet point which was then encased with GRP cladding.

This was topped off with a bespoke fabricated stainless steel mesh grating maintenance walkway, a fall restraint system and serpentine ribbon of sloped glazing to the junction with the refurbished building. Bespoke formed armature covers completed the modern look.

D&D engineers liaised with the builder Willmott Dixon to ensure coordinated connections as main buildings were refurbished. They also liaised with a spotlight specialist to ensure cable runs, and suitably positioned reinforced mounting points, were available to them.

Multi-curve profiling

Allan said the feature would have been difficult to construct economically using materials other than GRP because of its multi-curve profiling.

He added the canopy was manufactured off site in modules which meant there were shorter on-site periods.
