Police fine host of baby shower for breaking Covid restrictions

Police are used to breaking up parties, but officers in Charnwood last night fined the host of a lockdown-breaking baby shower.

The police gave no details or where or when but they said in a tweet at about 9pm last night: “This evening response officers have issued a Covid Fixed Penalty Notice to the occupant of an address hosting a baby shower.”

It comes after a busy week for police dealing with lockdown breakers.

Officers in Charnwood found themselves breaking up another party involving 16 people in a house in Storer Road, Loughborough. Eight of the people were fined £800 for hosting the party last weekend.

Also last weekend, a Leicester man was fined £200 for going camping up a mountain in the Lake District with a friend. One of the men had breathing problems and when the mountain rescue volunteers went to help them in the middle of the night in sub-zero temperatures, one of the volunteers fell and suffered severe spinal injuries.

Leicestershire Police have also fined two off-duty Derbyshire officers who decided to meet up in this county last weekend. They were fined and also referred to their police standards department.

The force said earlier this month it had handed out more fines for lockdown breaches in January than in the whole of last year combined.

It issued a total of 889 fixed penalty notices between New Year’s Day and Tuesday, February 2, which is equivalent to about £170,000 in fines.

A man who had tested positive but still went shopping in Ibstock, near Coalville

Seven people watching a boxing match together at a house in Syston

Four men from different households going to get a McDonald’s meal together

Five men at a party at Merlin Heights a De Montfort University block in Bath Lane, Leicester

A London man who had driven to Coalville to help out his family with DIY work

Four people having a party at a house in Heritage Way, Leicester

A couple watching planes at East Midlands Airport

Several people who were with their cars parked in Salisbury Road, Leicester, who told officers they were “chillin’”

Over the border in Derbyshire the police have also had a busy start to the year, with one man found naked in his car at Calke Abbey, just north of Ashby.

He told police he had gone out to buy wet wipes – but had no explanation for his lack of clothes.

The man was fined by the Derbyshire police officers for breaking the lockdown rules and given an official notice warning him not to show up naked in public again.

Other notable examples from over the border in Derbyshire recently included:

• Five people who were fined after drinking at a pub in Stoney Middleton – officers discovered them hiding in the kitchen and fined them £200 each, with a £1,000 fine for the licensee.
• Three suspected drug dealers found together in a BMW in the north of the county – police later warned the public that going out to sell illegal drugs certainly did not qualify as essential travel. The men were also arrested and drugs and the car seized.
• A group of Albanian men who had driven to the Peak District from London because they found lockdown boring. The driver was also found to have no valid driving licence so the police also seized their car, leaving them with a long trip home.
• A gathering of youngsters at Go Ape near Cannock Chase was broken up, sending the youths running for the woods. Some were caught and their parents ended up with £200 fines.
