The pretty village 86 minutes from London that’s Britain’s answer to Venice

Holiday opportunities have been few and far between as many of us have been stuck indoors since the first lockdown.

While jetting off on a holiday abroad is out of the question, there are many quaint locations not too far from London worth exploring.

One village in the south of England is the perfect example of bringing the feel of one of Europe’s most visited Mediterranean cities to Britain.

Bosham is an idyllic coastal village in West Sussex.

It really is a picturesque little part of the UK

It stands on a small peninsula on Chichester harbour providing an excellent location for keen sailors, yachters and those who just want to see the sun set beyond its glistening horizon.

The village has around 3,000 inhabitants and is the perfect weekend escape from the hustle and bustle and building laden streets of London – at least when we’re not in the middle of a pandemic, for now you need to stay at home.

It is surrounded by water much like Venice, and when the tide is high the waves can sometimes lap at the feet of the seaside houses.

Bosham retains an old world feel to it, untainted by modern infrastructure and big buildings.

The streets and houses are uniformly quaint and historic, surrounded by plenty of greenery.

Bosham is also steeped in history.

It is mentioned in the Bayeux Tapestry, to the 1064 meeting of Harold and Edward the Confessor on the way to meet William of Normandy to discuss who would succeed Edward to the throne:

“Ubi Harold Dux Anglorum et sui milites equitant ad Bosham ecclesia[m]”

(Where Harold, Earl of the English, and his army ride to Bosham church)

Bosham’s Holy Trinity Church still stands, having been around since the Anglo-Saxon times.

It’s definitely a place to relax and forget about the busy day to day, and there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and tea rooms to dine in (when they’re open!).

Bosham’s Quay is its highlight however.

You can see plenty of small boats moored to its dock, wildlife enthusiasts will witness swans and fowl flocking, and photographers will be spoilt for a view.

While Venice may have St. Mark’s Basilica and its Grand Canals, Bosham gives it a run for its money – plus it’s much more tranquil than the packed Venetian squares!

From East Croydon it’ll take you under an hour and a half as you take the Southern train to Southampton Central, getting off at Barnham.
