‘I tried the best North London Indian takeaway according to TripAdvisor and can’t wait to go back’ – Jacob Phillips

I’ll be honest. This lockdown I’ve been eating a lot of takeaways.

Ordering out is one of the few luxuries we can have at the moment.

Cosying up to a bit of TV and some good food helps make the lockdown pass that little bit easier.

However, in my takeaway binging I came across a unique problem. Over the past year I have exhausted all of my local options.

And while I love my closest Indian restaurant and chippy my thoughts began to wonder whether I could upgrade my Friday night feasts.

Curious at what may lie beyond the onion bhajis and battered cod of East Finchley, I turned to TripAdvisor to explore what may be out there.

It did not take long to find the appropriately named ‘London Delivery Restaurants’ ranking page and I felt like my mind had expanded.

There was an endless realm of foodie heavens, all of which could arrive straight to my door. The opportunities were endless.

Leading the charge to enlightened taste buds was Amrutha Lounge, a vegan restaurant in Earlsfield.

Not only is Amrutha Lounge the top delivering restaurant in London, bagging a five star rating after 651 reviews, it also ranked third in all London restaurants making it the perfect place to go and celebrate when the lockdown finishes.

But hidden away behind Amrutha Lounge’s golden glow was the perfect delivery for me. A Taste of Nawab is North London’s best rated restaurant.

With a special sauce which attracts visitors from as far afield as Canada, China, Germany, Italy and the US I was excited to see what the Muswell Hill restaurant was about.

After 1,250 reviews a Taste of Nawab has a five star review on TripAdvisor and reviewers have left nothing but compliments on its page.

Only 12 of those reviews had rated the restaurant as terrible and one reviewer had posted a comment saying: “By far the best Indian restaurant in the area. I wouldn’t order from anywhere else.”

Curious whether I too would ever opt for another takeaway after sampling Taste of Nawab, I picked up the phone and rang the restaurant.

Feeling like a true food critic I asked the waiter who picked up the phone at the restaurant for a recommendation – foolishly not thinking about how much it would cost.

He selected the vegetable Korai, a highly spiced dish with fresh garlic, spring onions, funugreek, tomatoes, green pepper and herbs, on the chef’s recommendation menu and to my thanks it didn’t break the wallet.

Costing just £7.25 the dish seemed great value and I couldn’t put a price on trying a food called ‘funugreek’ for the first time. Paired with some coconut rice my meal came to just £11.50 including a service charge.

Roughly £3 cheaper than my usual order I felt like I had just been upgraded to first class on a long haul flight.

The verdict

With the order taking 75 minutes to arrive I opted to pick up my meal from the restaurant.

To my delight my meal was piping hot on arrival and as I cycled the mile long route home with the meal in my rucksack, it felt like I had the best smelling water bottle inside the M25.

Thankfully despite the snow on the road and my frozen fingers the meal was still perfectly warm and I was pleasantly surprised by how much food there was.

Although it didn’t look particularly special my meal left a lasting impression on my tastebuds

Not only was there a giant complimentary poppadum but there was more than another for several portions.

However, still the portion size left me wanting more as from the first bite I was taken to a peanut butter infused heaven.

All the flavours melted together and the slow cooked vegetables were more consistent than the 2004 Arsenal Invincibles.

Even better, the flavour changed as the spices reached the back of my throat. The after taste was completely different to the first bites I had taken providing two meals in one.

I always think a sign of a good meal is how quickly and quietly you eat it. In this case I barely came up for air.

So will I be returning to my ordinary takeaway? Sadly not. My taste buds feel like they have been elevated.

Is Taste Of Nawab the best meal I’ve had in London? Well, we’ll have to wait and see what Amrutha Lounge has done to dethrone such an affordable, modest North London gem.

I will certainly be returning!
