What Gabriel Magalhaes did in Arsenal training session ahead of Leeds United clash

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes is slowly developing a knack for scoring special goals in training.

The £27m signing from Lille last summer was brought in by Mikel Arteta to help shore up a previously leaky backline and was very much a regular in the side until a sending off in the 1-1 draw at home to Southampton in December.

Gabriel also had a spell out of the side because of a positive Covid-19 test, and has had to remain patient for another run in the side with Pablo Mari and David Luiz impressing in his absence.

However, the 23-year-old has featured in Arsenal’s last two games and will be hopeful of keeping his place in the starting XI for the visit of Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Even if Arteta opts against starting Gabriel in defence, he may have noticed the Brazilian’s talents at the other end during training this week.

On Wednesday, footage has emerged of the defender curling a long-range effort into the top corner during training, and fans enjoyed seeing that part of his game.

And to show that goal wasn’t a fluke, Gabriel netted yet another stunning strike in training on Friday.

As spotted in a behind the scenes of Arsenal’s training session video uploaded to YouTube, at around the 4.50-minute mark, the centre-back starts and finishes an attack.

After receiving the ball, he strides forward, swaps passes with Alexandre Lacazette before curling a spectacular effort past Mat Ryan in the Gunners goal.

…and scores. Then calls for his teammates to join in the celebrations.

To make the goal even more special, Gabriel calls for his teammates to join him in celebration.

There’s no confirmation that his request was granted as the camera operator cut away with the Brazilian waving his hands in the air.

As mentioned above, Gabriel has had a decent debut season in English football has progressed, although, Arteta has defended his centre-back over claims he is ‘rusty’, saying two weeks ago: “Maybe. He hasn’t played enough minutes in the last month or so since he had the COVID.

“He had to stay at home, he hasn’t trained as much as we would like him to. It’s a player that has done so well since he’s joined us.”
