ovid-19 cases are falling fastest in a stripe of boroughs running from north to south London, official figures reveal today as the capital remains the region seeing the sharpest decline in the disease.

They show that the biggest drop was 47.6 per cent in Haringey in the week to February 6 with a seven-day rate of 144.8 new infections per 100,000.

In the north of the city, confirmed cases dropped 42 per cent in Enfield to a rate of 174.1 and in Islington by 42.4 per cent to a rate of 124.6.

South of the river, Southwark saw a fall of 42.9 per cent to a rate of 148.4 and Lewisham 39.2 per cent with a rate of 165.4.

Many of the biggest falls are in inner city boroughs hardest hit by the second wave.

Cases were down 45.8 per cent in Tower Hamlets to a rate of 118.9 and 44.9 per cent in Hackney and the City of London with a rate of 124.1.

Camden has the lowest rate at 104.8 after a fall in cases of 37.4 per cent and is close to dipping below the 100 rate level which public health chiefs want the capital as a whole to go below before lockdown is eased.

Outer London boroughs in west London are seeing the smallest drops, with cases down 17.9 per cent in Richmond to a rate of 180.8 and 26.6 per cent in Hounslow to a rate of 311.6.

Covid rates have fallen dramatically in the capital since early January but still remain significantly above levels at which lockdown was eased in the summer:

– Twenty boroughs have a seven-day rate between 100 and 200.

– Ten have a rate between 200 and 300.

– Two are still above 300, Hounslow and Ealing on 308.7.

– A further 1588 confirmed cases were announced for London yesterday, with the real number of infections far higher given how many people have the disease asymptomatically.

– Hospitals still remain under huge pressure with thousands of Covid patients and many of them have had to postpone non-urgent operations.

London’s seven-day rate has dropped to 192.2 new infections per 100,000 in the week to February 6, a fall of 34.5 per cent.
