Explosion heard in east London - 999 crews attend as building is 'evacuated'

A building has reportedly been evacuated in east London after reports of an explosion.

Police and the fire brigade have attended the incident in the Hoxton area of Hackney.

One local said a door and window had been blown off by the force of the bang.

Reports of an incident first emerged a few minutes before 10pm tonight, Thursday, February 11.

Footage online shows emergency services in the area and what appears to be a badly damaged apartment.

According to the Hoxton & Shoreditch Labour Twitter account, the incident happened at Hathaway House on the Arden Estate.

That account says that an evacuation has taken place, although it is not clear how many residents were forced out by the incident.

Hackney councillor Kam Adams is reportedly at the scene offering assistance.

Numerous reports online have spoken of an explosion or loud bang in the area.

One person on Twitter said: “I heard it from my flat – very loud bang. Praise to @lfbhackney [the local fire brigade] for responding so quickly.”

Jess Kate Tweed, who was nearby at the time, said on Twitter: “Explosion in the block of flats opposite me in Hoxton.

“Fire and police are checking it out. The door and window blew out the flat on the top floor. No fire thankfully!”

Reece Manigan echoed this, saying on Twitter that there had been a “small explosion”.

The Met Police have been approached for comment.
